Pass along some of those unused articles and make a few dollars in the process. All participants will have balloons flying in front of their homes. Come-on out and visit the community and have lunch at the Firehall. Organized by the Community Association.
May Day is currently celebrated as a festival for children marking the reappearance of flowers during the spring. It is traditionally greeted with joyous dancing around a garland pole, called the maypole, from which hang streamers held by dancers. Included in the festivities in Lavington, is the crowning of the May Day Royalty and the presentation of the Alf Desnoyer Award to a worthy student from the school. The students of the school then take turns entertaining guests and each other, with music and dance. After the merriment in the park an Afternoon Tea is served in the school for Royalty and adults. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to get out and visit with friends and neighbours and to observe the result of cooperative energies of Community and School....and in particular the children. Lavington is one of only a few communities upholding this tradition in British Columbia and has been doing so for over 50 years. Elsewhere on this site are photographs and information on the 50th May Day reunion held in May of 1998.
In May of 1993 residents of Coldstream and Lavington set out to arrange a community day. Every spring since, the event has attracted an increasingly diversified group of special locals. This non-commercial event is accomplished through the efforts of volunteers. Come on out and relax with friends and neighbours.
Some events included have been:
The Vernon and District Kennel Club holds it's annual championship show and obedience trials every year on the 1st weekend after the long weekend in July. It is a 3 day show featuring such events as Junior Handling, Obedience, Conformation, and Agility. This is a dog lovers paradise offering information on breeding, handling and the latest in "doggy stuff" to breeders and the general public. Everyone is welcome and the swimming pool is open.
Every year in Lavington residents gather for the Canada's Remembrance Day ceremony. Local community organizations and public groups are encouraged to place a wreath at the Cenotaph in remembrance of those that have given their lives in previous wars around the world. Lavington residents are also given an opportunity to place their poppies on the Cenotaph in a gesture of gratitude for those who have fought for our freedom.
