Sewer Tax Update

On March 8/99 Coldstream Council passed 1st, 2nd and 3rd readings of a bylaw authorizing the borrowing of up to $12 million for the construction of a sewage disposal plant. In order to fund the borrowing they are considering a number of options from taxing just the sewered area to charging everyone in the Municipality an annual environmental tax. The actual amount hasn’t been decided but $100/yr has been suggested. Administration’s goal is to keep sewer users annual fees the same as they are now under Vernon Sewer Agreement, so some form of subsidy is expected.

Many residents have voiced opposition to subsidizing sewer users when Coldstream is presently only at 50% usage on the Vernon Sewer Agreement. Council will be deciding what option to pursue at a meeting held March 29th @ 7:00pm, Okanagan University College Lecture Theatre. If you want to register your views write Council and attend the March 29th meeting and the following April 12th Council meeting at the Lavington Community School when the decision will be offically passed.
