Lavington Community School May 9, 1998 . . . . Public Consultation
with Tolko
lasted about 4 hours. Some good questions were asked. Even some
employees were
surprised at the complexity of some of the problems.

. . . . "They say they are running an efficient burner
but they aren't."

The Morning Star May 13, 1998. . . Burner Plan Rejected.
Coldstream Council refused to endorse a [Tolko] proposed five-year
extension on provincial fallout regulations for Tolko burner.
Resident Rae Humeston said "This is a public health issue,
plain and simple. . . . children have the RIGHT to a smoke-free
environment & are unable to speak for themselves."

THE SUN May 14, 1998. . . Dr. Andrew Ross outlined
the risks of allowing the burner to continue. ". . . they
are so small that 64,000 particles, described as PM2.5, can fit
on the dot of an i. . . . 168,663 days of school were lost in
B.C. in 1995 because of problems from this particulate matter."

THE SUN May 17, 1998. . . . NORD directors agreed to
support an extension . . . until the end of 1999 and to review
that support annually. Tolko is proposing its Lavington burner
be used as a regional waste incinerator
for up to 8 mills.
Many neighbours of the plant oppose [Tolkos] plan.

Morning Star June 7, 1998. . . School District board
chairman McQueen appalled
that previous extensions were given without
air monitoring.

Morning Star June 10, 1998. . . Asthma . . . longer
it goes on, the more chronic it gets, and the greater the reaction
is.

has been turned off !!!!
